James LamJames likes to say that he is “the most educated photographer ever, but not in the field of photography”. Armed with an Masters of Engineering and an MBA, James started Learn Photography Canada when he himself discovered a love for the art. “At a time in my life when everything seemed to be in chaos, photography was the only thing that made sense. I love sharing that passion and moment with people.” Over many years, James has honed his skills and has photographed fantastic portraits, weddings and event photographs. His passion still remains travel photography though where he fervently stays out late and gets up early to capture the best light. Favourite places to travel include a long lineup in Europe, and anywhere where there are historic ruins. Beach and sun is also tempting during the cold, long month of February in Calgary. James still regularly teaches classes himself and can’t seem to pull away. Look forward to seeing James in any of the upcoming classes.

Glynnis MutchGlynnis is one of our most talented photography instructors and regularly leads our Digital I beginner photography courses as well as our people photography course! A graduate of the Alberta College of Art and Design, Glynnis finds her passion while working in commercial, editorial portrait and studio jobs. Glynnis has lived all over the world and she attributes her keen eye to her cosmopolitan upbringing. Like most photographers, Glynnis fell in love with the art form at a younger age. “When I was younger, I saved up to buy a Digital SLR until my mother found out and forced me instead to get a film SLR. It forced me to employ the manual settings and really learn how to expose properly. While that was an exasperating lesson to learn, I now thank my mother all the time for doing this.” It is Glynnis’ belief that everybody has the ability to take amazing photographs, but must first learn about their camera and understand how to best adapt the settings to create the best photos they can.

Eric ChuGrowing up, Eric was always interested in art but it wasn’t until a friend showed him how to use a film camera that everything fell into place. He always loved art and was fascinated with how things looked but never found the right medium to express that creativity until he picked up a camera. Ever since that time, he’s been hooked! Eric sees photography as a lifestyle, a way to experience the world and share it with others. His work focuses on the raw, vulnerable and innate beauty in each subject. Over the past several years he has worked on fashion, editorial and commercial projects. One of the reasons he started shooting was to gain a skill that could be passed on to others. He gets just as excited seeing someone learn how to use their camera and create images they love just as much as working on his own projects. Eric is constantly inspired by the work of his students. John MackennaA former student of Learn Photography Canada, John became infatuated with photography in our Digital I course and has been exploring this passion every since. Growing up in Ireland, John developed a keen eye for vast landscapes and consistently seeks opportunities to capture the beauty of life in unexpected places; especially in the seemingly dark or mundane. Bonus? His Irish accent is sure to keep you attentive throughout the whole course (seriously – you won’t want him to stop talking!) Always looking to have a bit of fun in each class he teaches, John doesn’t like to take life or himself too seriously. He loves meeting new people and sharing his passion with others. Whenever John picks up his camera he always keeps the words of Henry David Thoreau in mind: “It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.”
