James Lam

James likes to say that he is “the most educated photographer ever, but not in the field of photography”. Armed with an Masters of Engineering and an MBA, James started Learn Photography Canada when he himself discovered a love for the art. “At a time in my life when everything seemed to be in chaos, photography was the only thing that made sense. I love sharing that passion and moment with people.”

Over many years, James has honed his skills and has photographed fantastic portraits, weddings and event photographs. His passion still remains travel photography though where he fervently stays out late and gets up early to capture the best light. Favourite places to travel include a long lineup in Europe, and anywhere where there are historic ruins. Beach and sun is also tempting during the cold, long month of February in Calgary.

James still regularly teaches classes himself and can’t seem to pull away. Look forward to seeing James in any of the upcoming classes.

Jana Rohen

Jana loves photography and it really shows! An Australian who decided that she liked the mountains more than the beach (I know, we’re still wondering about her), Jana immigrated to Canada almost 5 years ago and has loved every moment of it.

Jana has an undeniably enthusiastic style of instruction that is infectious to students and instructors alike. She regularly trains our newest instructors and you might be lucky enough to catch her at any of the Digital I Beginner photography classes on the weekend. Make sure you warmly greet her with a “G’day Mate!”

Glynnis Mutch

Glynnis is one of our most talented photography instructors and regularly leads our Digital I beginner photography courses as well as our people photography course! A graduate of the Alberta College of Art and Design, Glynnis finds her passion while working in commercial, editorial portrait and studio jobs.

Glynnis has lived all over the world and she attributes her keen eye to her cosmopolitan upbringing. Like most photographers, Glynnis fell in love with the art form at a younger age. “When I was younger, I saved up to buy a Digital SLR until my mother found out and forced me instead to get a film SLR. It forced me to employ the manual settings and really learn how to expose properly. While that was an exasperating lesson to learn, I now thank my mother all the time for doing this.”

It is Glynnis’ belief that everybody has the ability to take amazing photographs, but must first learn about their camera and understand how to best adapt the settings to create the best photos they can.

  • Main Camera: Canon 5D Mk3
  • Favourite Lens: 85mm 1.4

Don Orchard

Don was educated as a photographer and journalist and notes one of the first photographic challenges he ever faced was getting hired on as a news photographer equipped with one battered camera body and decrepit lens.
“I didn’t care about the gear, I was fresh out of school and thrilled to have a demanding opportunity that so perfectly aligned with my passion.”

With professional experience in news, portrait and sports photography, as well as instruction, Don’s interest now focuses on three primary photographic pursuits.

“Landscape photography offers the opportunity to see things with fresh eyes. To contemplate the amazing beauty around us and be present in the moment. Wildlife photography demands engagement on terms not necessarily of your own making. It presents multiple constraints and offers unique interactions. And teaching…..that may offer the biggest reward of all. It is fun and easy to engage someone with a shared interest and passion. And seeing a student’s eyes light up with the delight that comes with success puts a big smile on

  • Main Camera: Canon 5D Mk2
  • Favourite Lens: Canon 70-200mm 2.8

Each week we upload a selection of work from our photography students.
