If you’re holiday involves a flight to another country, or crossing the US border, you could save yourself a big hassle when you return. You may be questioned about your gear when you arrive back home to ensure you didn’t buy the gear whilst abroad. To cover yourself, register your gear with Canadian Border Services Agency before you go. When you arrive at the airport, just ask the first “official” you see where the office is.
You will have to list each piece – lenses, camera bodies, with their serial numbers on a BSF407 form. The Canadian Border Officer will then stamp and sign the form and give it to you to present upon your return. The registration form can be used for more than one trip as long as it is for the same equipment. . Keep this signed document in a safe place– with your passport. Keep in mind if on returning to Canada they question you about where you purchased the gear, and you don’t have your little BSF407 form, you can be forced to pay retail price of the equipment and the appropriate duty and taxes. AND, the equipment can be confiscated. That could be a downer after a great holiday!
