You’ve probably seen Calgary Peace Bridge photos on Instagram a thousand times. Or perhaps your Facebook feed is flooding with photos of the Calgary Tower. Although we love YYC, photographing the same places over and over again can get repetitive and (GASP!) unoriginal. At times, you’ll have to discover new places to photograph. To help, we’ve complied a list of our top 5 totally underrated YYC photography locations that will get you creating “outside-of-the-ordinary” shots!
2. SAIT: We. Love. This. Campus. SAIT has basically the best view out of all of the other University campuses in Calgary. Also, it’s located so perfectly that you can see most of downtown, and it’s absolutely beautiful – especially at night. Not to mention, SAIT also has a very old, Hogwarts-looking building on campus that would make some wicked shots
3. Street photography downtown: And we mean literally anywhere downtown. Peruse the streets of Calgary in the early morning golden hour or get artsy photographing city lights in the evening. Photographing downtown can be both challenging yet endlessly adventurous especially when it comes to photography. Keep in mind leading lines and look for unique architecture/sculptures. Calgary has some pretty intriguing art and it definitely deserves to be photographed.
4. Rundle Ruins: Located within walking distance from the Saddledome, Rundle Ruins are one of Calgary’s most unique parks. These stone arches make amazing architectural shots and as an added bonus, there are even steps on some of the ruins. This means good news for people photography; you can get models to sit on the ruins themselves and get an epic backdrop.
5. Sunnyside LRT Station: This LRT stations has a super cool hangout/skatepark/we actually have no idea what it’s called photography spot right next to it. There’s an outdoor foosball machine and a vegetable garden. Plus, the area is out in the open with the added benefit of the C-train passing by (slow shutter speeds anyone?).
