Photography Production Trends - Learn Photography - Photography Trends Calgary

Our interest in the advancement of digital photography is leading to rapid changes every year. If you’re even remotely interested in the area of digital photography you should be careful to stay abreast of the most recent developments.

Technological advances can significantly alter the way you capture and store your photos, as well as how you design and publish your finished work.  At Learn Photography Canada, it is our goal to provide resources and educational tools for you to expand your photography capabilities.

If you’re a professional photographer, you have an even greater need to stay up-to-date with the most recent trends in the digital photography industry. We have compiled a list of key trends for 2015 that you might find helpful:

Increased Popularity of Mirrorless Cameras

While the development of the Mirrorless, interchangeable lens camera happened more than a decade ago, these cameras haven’t attracted much attention until fairly recently. Because of their lack of mirror, these cameras tend to be smaller in size, which was a deterrent for many photography professionals who prefer their cameras to look a certain way. Although most professional photographers would still opt for a DSLR over a mirrorless camera, this could begin to change as the technology used in mirrorless cameras continues to improve.

Apple Phasing Out Aperture Photo

Many changes could be in store for Apple this year, but one of the more significant for photographers will be the phasing out of their photo management tool, Aperture, as well as iPhoto. Fortunately, both programs will be replaced by the new Photos app and the iCloud Photo Library, respectively. Aperture users will be able to transfer their photo libraries to the Photos app seamlessly.

Adobe’s Photoshop + Lightroom Package

The trend of “bundling” services will continue in 2015, and Adobe will look to take advantage of our fascination with bundles by providing a packaged combination of Photoshop and Lightroom. If you’re unfamiliar with Lightroom, their official website describes the program as, “your home base for all your photos, whether they’re from your iPhone, point-and-shoot camera, or DSLR.”

Integration of Photoshop, Lightroom, and Camera RAW

Throughout 2015 there will be a focus on continued integration of all your photo management tools. IF you’re a professional photographer, it’s important for all your tools to work together with seamless synchronicity. Many Photoshop and Acrobat experts are increasingly integrating Adobe Camera RAW, Photoshop, and Lightroom in order to standardize their tools and improve overall workflow. This trend of integration is expected to continue over the next few years.

RAW Capture to Smart Object

If you’re unfamiliar with Smart Objects in Photoshop, they are the wrappers that contain an original RAW file from your camera. Originally, their purpose was to aid designers in more quickly updating graphics on their web pages.

“In Photoshop CC and CS6,” according to Adobe, “you can embed the contents of an image into a Photoshop document. In Photoshop CC, you can also create Linked Smart Objects whose contents are references from external image files. The contents of a Linked Smart Object are updated when its source image file changes.”

As a professional photographer, or simply as someone interested in the art of photography, it’s important to research and understand how technological advancements will affect your photography and the production of your finished work.
