Fall. It’s so short here in Calgary… It feels like from the moment the leaves have turned to the onset of snow is about 3 days. It’s important to make the most of it before the opportunity for great Fall photos passes you by!
Here are a few tips to help out:
- Get out there! The earlier you go hunting for Fall Photos the better. Remember even if you are out there too soon, you can always go out there again and again and again. If you leave it too late though you’ll be wishing you had just gotten out there! As a guide, the best time to head out for Fall photography in Alberta is said to be the 3rd and 4th weeks of September – keep an eye around for those incredible colours appearing downtown though so you’re sure you don’t miss them!
- The Golden Hour is even more golden. That warm, golden glow of early morning or late evening light is beautiful on any day. Now imagine this light hitting the beautiful golden leaves of the Birch or Poplar trees and just think about how beautiful that combination can be!
- Location is key. Do some research before you head out. A couple of great locations include Wedge Pond in Kananaskis and the woods just north of Cochrane. A simple Google search will reveal many more!
- Look for great light. Stormy weather will give you great contrast with incredible, dark backgrounds. Still bodies of water (best in the early, early morning) are perfect for reflection shots. Look for the details with a telephoto lens while underexposing a couple of stops. Play around and try a few different things!
