THE START OF SOMETHING GREAT
Learn Photography Canada has humble roots. When we first started in Calgary in 2012, James Lam was the owner operator who literally did everything in the business. The goal was and still is the same: to help people capture their once in a lifetime memories that they were missing year after year. Did you know that 2 out of every 3 SLR cameras that are purchased never leave the automatic setting? James quickly realized that there was great demand for simple, one-day, hands-on courses where students could explore city iconic sites. The first tagline that we developed was “become a tourist in your own town” because that’s exactly what students did.
Just a few weeks in, James realized that this was a product that would not do well in just Calgary but all around Canada.
The Start of a Franchise
The Start of a Franchise
Learn Photography Canada opened it’s doors in Edmonton and Vancouver in 2012 and 2013 respectively. While both cities started well, what James noticed was that there was a high volumes of customers, he started to feel more and more distant to each one. This was especially the case since much of the administration and teaching was done by a talented instructors. Something was lost in translation - our personal connection with our students had been lost and we no longer enjoyed the strong re-booking rate that personalized attention provides.
In a heartbreaking and difficult decision, James decided it was time to close the doors in Edmonton and Vancouver to concentrate on the original high quality product and pleasing customers. At the same time, he knew that the model was right if he could find the right owner who was as passionate about the product and customers as he was. The franchising model was born and Learn Photography Canada sold its first franchise in 2014.
Why a Franchise?
Why a Franchise?
Photography principles have not changed since the first photograph was taken. So why are so many people still struggling with photographing special moments?
The Learn Photography Approach
At Learn Photography Canada we have developed a systematized and fun system that ensures people learn and remember the fundamentals of photography. We pride ourselves on our kinesthetic hands-on process that brings students to iconic locations in their city to practice. By thinking outside the he classroom, we have effectively turned the industry on its head by immersing our students in what is most important – hands on learning with their camera. The end result is a customer who develops an appreciation for the art of photography and confidently captures their travel and family memories.
We believe our photography courses are the most effective in the world. We have continually refined them over hundreds of courses and thousands of students. Our customers leave empowered and feeling great about themselves. The result is an extremely satisfied clientele and a high re-booking rate. Profit is just a bonus of empowering others to capture their memories in photographs.
Having local franchise owners truly allows our amazing product to shine. Our owners care for our customers and develop the kind of relationship that brings in strong word of mouth business as well as repeat customers. They care for their own businesses, and make local decisions while helping to build their community. Franchise owners are at the heart of Learn Photography Canada.

James likes to say that he is “the most educated photographer ever, but not in the field of photography”. Armed with an Masters of Engineering and an MBA, James started Learn Photography Canada when he himself discovered a love for the art. “At a time in my life when everything seemed to be in chaos, photography was the only thing that made sense. I love sharing that passion and moment with people.”
Over many years, James has honed his skills and has photographed fantastic portraits, weddings and event photographs. His passion still remains travel photography though where he fervently stays out late and gets up early to capture the best light. Favourite places to travel include a long lineup in Europe, and anywhere where there are historic ruins. Beach and sun is also tempting during the cold, long month of February in Calgary.
James uses the skills he developed through his business training to continually grow Learn Photography Canada. Seemingly always mentoring other young photographers and budding entrepreneurs, James has grown he company form a one-person business to a full franchise organization that continues to grow every year. While James still oversees all elements of the company he still views the support and promotion of his franchise owners as the most important part of his job.
